Position-less: An assessment of Basketball’s Direction

At its highest level, basketball has become position-less. What was once a game orchestrated by a coach and the roles they assign to us, we now have a fluidity, versatility and exchangeability to each position. Nobody’s restricted by their role but everyone’s restricted by their ability.

Nobody’s restricted by role; everyone’s restricted by ability.

As a result, players fill spots on the floor, not positions. The space you occupy on the court determines your movements and responsibilities. For those of us privileged to develop the next generation, contextualize the skills student-athletes must learn (shooting, passing, dribbling, cutting, screening, rebounding etc.) through the prism of court-spacing.

Such as…

What must players occupying the “corners” ALWAYS do on drives to the baseline?

make themselves available!

Specializing in a single skill-set will soon not be enough. The 5 best playmakers on the team will be on the floor at all times. The ability to understand and deploy skill in each space will determine who’s a part of basketball’s future era. Be prepared!
